Resumen:
Since 1960, the coyote (Canis latrans dickeyi Nelson), has extended its distribution southward in Central America by almost 16,000 km2. By 1980 it occupied about 25,567 km2 in Costa Rica (50%of national territory) and 3,025 km3 in Panama, mostly along the Pacific coast. Deforestation practices, that convert forest into cattle ranches, create favorable coyote habitat and several aspects of coyote biology were probably responsible for the rapid movement by the species in the last two decades from northwest Costa Rica to western Panama.
