Resumen: Aviary .experiments were conducted to determine the fruit selection patterns of two large frugivorous bird which forage in different ways: the collared aracari (Pteroglossus wrquatus) and the slaty-tailed trogon (Trogon massena). Aracaris take fruits while perched whereas trogons pluck fruits on the wing. Fruit species, sire and ripeness stage were important variables in determining fruit preference. However, preferences based on these properties were modified by changing the distance of the fruit to the perch, the properties of the perch, and the presence of other fruits on adjacent perches. In contrast to aracaris and to smaller fruit-eating birds, trogons preferred fruits distant from a perch. Trogons were also more selective than aracaris with respect to fruit ripeness, possibly due in part to higher foraging costs imposed by their mode of foraging on the wing.
