Resumen:
Captive breeding of vertebrates in Costa Rica, has been carried out for many years, but there is not an exact date of its beginning. Breeding of species such as the Agouti paca (Linnaeus, 1766) is considered a family tradition, for the Am macao (Linnaeus, 1758), Iguana iguana (Linnaeus 1758), Crocodylus acutus (Cuvier, 1807) and Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmermann 1789), the efforts have been concentrated on different objectives such as conservation, recuperation of wild populations and exhibition. Captive breeding is not the solution to the problems present with wild populations of these species; nevertheless, an alternative is offered that must be well oriented. Following the technical recommendations, could give an option to reducing pressure on the wild populations, and offer an alternative of recuperation as is the case of A. macao program in Costa Rica (Zooave).
