Resumen: Knowledge of species present on a site is a valuable resource for activities developed in protected areas. The purpose of this study was to identify the vertebrate species found in Madre Verde Reserve located in Montes del Aguacate, Costa Rica at La Granja de Palmares, between April 2005 and December 2006. Although, most species are common and adapted to altered environments, several species valuable for conservation were identified. Ninety two species of birds were found, three of them are endangered and 19 are migratory. Thirty seven species of mammals are reported, two endangered, one threatened and endemic and also one with a low population. Of reptiles, 14 species were found (one endangered) and of amphibians only five species. In conclusion, the study shows that the fauna of this reserve consists mostly of species that are somewhat dependent on the forest, or that can adapt to disturbed areas; for that reason they reflect the state of conservation of the area, which consists of a few forest fragments and wooded areas in regeneration surrounded by agricultural land.
